Tibetan Spaniels Health Issues
The most common health problems in Tibetan Spaniels:
Eye diseases are the major concern in Tibetan Spaniels, especially progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), eyelash abnormalities, cherry eye, tear duct disorders, and lens luxation.
Allergies cause itchy skin and can lead to bacterial skin infections (pyoderma).
Orthopedic diseases are a continuing concern, especially luxating patella (very common), hip dysplasia (somewhat common), and elbow dysplasia (the least common). The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of 240 Tibetan Spaniels and found 8% dysplastic. This is high for a small dog.
Liver shunt and heart disease occur in Tibetan Spaniels.
